What is a balustrade?

The railing
that keeps you on the deck.

A balustrade is the railing along the edge of a balcony, a deck or a set of stairs. Its job is to stop anyone falling off. Once a deck is more than a metre off the ground, the National Construction Code wants one at least 1000mm high.

PoolPerf® Perforated Balustrading is made 1200mm high. Those extra 200mm are what let one panel be the balustrade and the pool fence at the same time.

When the deck is the pool fence

When your balcony
is also your pool fence.

If you can walk from a deck, a balcony or a verandah straight to the pool, the edge of that deck is part of the pool fence. So it has two jobs. It has to stop a fall, and it has to keep a small child away from the water.

Every job is a little different. Balustrade rules vary from state to state and with the height of the drop, and your certifier or council has the final say on the finished job. Tell us the height of the drop and what the area is used for, and we will work it out with you. It is about a ten minute phone call.

How it is made

One sheet of aluminium.
Folded into its own frame.

Each panel starts as one sheet of 3mm aluminium. It is perforated, then folded along all four edges, so the frame and the panel are the same piece of metal. The folds are what give a flat sheet its strength.

  • Top and bottom: a 50 x 40mm double fold. This is the panel the engineering certificate covers.
  • Left and right: a 50mm fold.
  • Height: 1200mm, pool fence height.
  • Length: the engineering certificate covers panels up to 2300mm. We can make them up to 2900mm, but above 2300mm the certificate does not cover it, and you may need your own engineering.
  • Finish: powder coated in over 100 Dulux® and Interpon® colours.

End on, the sheet is folded over at the top and the bottom. From the front, it stands 1200mm off the floor, well over the 1000mm a balcony needs.

Which balustrade do you need?

Two balustrades.
One real difference.

Both are the same strong, certified panel, folded from one sheet of 3mm aluminium. The difference is the height. PoolPerf® makes it 1200mm high so it can be the pool fence as well. Decoview® makes it 1000mm high for balconies, decks and stairs with no pool involved.

Quick answers

Does my balcony need to meet the pool fence rules?

If you can get from the balcony or deck to the pool without going through a pool gate, yes. That edge is part of the pool fence, so it needs to meet the pool fence rules as well as the balcony rules. Your certifier or council has the final say on your layout, and we are happy to talk it through with you.

How high does a pool compliant balustrade need to be?

The pool fence rules ask for 1200mm, and a balcony more than a metre off the ground needs at least 1000mm. PoolPerf® Perforated Balustrading is made 1200mm high, so even sitting on the floor it clears both. The rules vary between states and with the height of the drop, so check yours with us or your certifier.

How long can each panel be?

Our engineering certificate covers panels up to 2300mm long. We can make panels up to 2900mm, but the certificate does not cover lengths over 2300mm, so you may need your own engineering for those.

Will it match my PoolPerf® pool fence?

Yes. It comes in the same designs and the same over 100 colours as the PoolPerf® pool fence, so the balcony and the pool fence below look like one job.

Can I use it for canal or waterfront fencing?

Yes. We warrant that every panel meets Australian Standards, but the standard warranty does not cover installation within 1km of the sea, so we will talk you through the right specification for your site. We recommend following the powder coater's maintenance schedule.

I do not have a pool. Can I still get a perforated balustrade?

What is PoolPerf® Perforated Balustrading made from?

One sheet of 3mm aluminium, perforated and then folded on all four edges. The top and bottom have a 50 x 40mm double fold and the sides have a 50mm fold, so the frame and the panel are one piece. It is powder coated in Dulux® or Interpon® colours.

Is it engineered?

Yes. The 50 x 40 folded panel is covered by an engineering certificate for panels up to 2300mm long.

What is the difference between a balustrade and a pool fence?

A balustrade stops people falling off a balcony, deck or stairs. A pool fence keeps small children away from the water. Where a deck or balcony opens onto the pool, one edge has to do both, and that is what PoolPerf® Perforated Balustrading is made for.

How much can I see through it?

It depends on the design and the colour. Plain PurePerf® in black is the most see-through. A busier design in a lighter colour gives more privacy.

What does the warranty cover?

Every panel carries a 10-year warranty against manufacturing defects, in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law. It does not cover installation within 1km of the sea or within 1.5m of a pool's splash zone, impact and accident damage, or harsh chemicals and abrasives. We recommend following the powder coater's maintenance schedule.

Can I use a PoolPerf® design on my balustrade?

Yes. Every PoolPerf® design can be cut into the balustrade, and every design is checked against AS1926.1 before it is cut. You can also have a design of your own. See the designs and colours.
